School of Remote Sensing Information Engineering is an information and engineering college that integrates remote sensing, surveying and mapping, and spatial information engineering technology. Since 1956, after more than 60 years' hard work by the pioneer of surveying and mapping, the founder of photogrammetry and remote sensing, academician Zhizhuo WANG, and the academic leaders, academician Deren LI, academician Zuxun ZHANG, academician Jianya GONG, and other experts and scholars, the college has preliminarily formed a complete talent training system from bachelors, masters, doctors to postdocs. It has always been among the top universities in China, delivering more than 10,000 senior professionals to society, and is praised by the industry as the cradle of talent training in surveying and remote sensing in China and even the world. At present, the college has four major disciplines for bachelor degrees, namely, “remote sensing science and technology”, “national geo-information monitoring”, “geographic information engineering”, “spatial information and digital technology”, four master of science degree authorization stations, namely, “photogrammetry and remote sensing”, “cartography and geographic information system”, “pattern recognition and intelligent system”, “remote sensing science and technology”, and a master of engineering degree authorization station of “resources and environmental engineering”. There are three doctoral degree authorization stations: “photogrammetry and remote sensing”, “cartography and geographic information engineering”, “remote sensing science and technology”, and the post-doctoral research station of “surveying and mapping science and technology”. Among them, “remote sensing science and technology” is a national first-class undergraduate discipline, and “photogrammetry and remote sensing” is the first batch of national key disciplines approved by theMinistry of Education. It belongs to "surveying and mapping science and technology", which is a national first-class key discipline, and it was selected as a “double first-class” construction discipline of theMinistry of Educationin 2017. In 2018, "remote sensing science and technology" was approved as the first batch of interdisciplinary subjects to have the doctoral degree authorization station.
There are more than 170 faculty members in the college, including 2 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2 academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 2 academicians of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences, 1 academician of the International Academy of Astronautics, 48 professors (research fellows), 53 associate professors (research associates), 16 national-level outstanding talents, and many provincial and ministerial-level outstanding scientific and technological and teaching talents. The college attaches great importance to talent training and has been successfully selected into the "Excellent Engineer Training Program" of the Ministry of Education. Academicians and other high-level talents at the national, provincial and ministerial levels have been teaching undergraduates for a long time.
Now there are 1 national teaching team, 1 national experimental teaching demonstration center, and 1 national virtual simulation experimental teaching platform in our school. The teaching courses "Principles and Applications of Remote Sensing", "Photogrammetry", "Digital Image Processing", and "Geospatial Information Engineering Technology" have been rated as national excellent courses, national excellent resource sharing courses, and national first-class undergraduate courses. Since the establishment of the college, it has cultivated more than 10,000 compound senior talents with specialized knowledge in photogrammetry, remote sensing, and spatial information engineering. Some of them have become academicians of the two academies, academic leaders, and doctoral supervisors. Some of them have become national-level experts with outstanding contributions. Many of them have gone on to leadership positions in the industry. School pays attention to international exchanges and has established friendly communication and fruitful cooperation with universities, scientific research institutions, and many famous experts and scholars at home and abroad in more than 20 countries and regions in the world. It has held many international academic conferences in various fields, selected young scholars and students to study and visit well-known universities and research institutions in many countries and regions, and carried out international exchange activities for students, which has won a good international reputation. In recent years, the international influence of remote sensing discipline of Wuhan University has been greatly improved, ranking first in the world in different international discipline rankings many times, and gradually began to lead the development of the world’s remote sensing discipline.
